★ State of Alaska  ·  12×18 Inch Handheld Stick Flag

Best For: Parades · Desk Display · Classrooms · Civic Events · Gifting · Souvenirs

The 12×18 inch size on a 24-inch wood pole is the recognized standard for handheld stick flags — large enough to wave and read clearly at parade distance, small enough for comfortable one-handed carrying and clean desk display. Printed polyester delivers vivid color reproduction at a format built for hands, desktops, and close-up celebration rather than flagpole installation.

12×18 Inch Flag 24-Inch Wood Pole Printed Polyester Pre-Assembled Desk Display Ready Benny Benson Design

Bring Alaska pride down to arm's length with the PromoPatriot Alaska State Stick Flag — 12×18 inches of printed polyester on a smooth 24-inch wood dowel, built for hands, desks, and close-up celebration. This is the right format when you need Alaska's bold navy-and-gold design at parade distance, classroom scale, or beside a monitor: pre-assembled, no hardware required, and fits any standard desk flag base straight out of the box.

Alaska's official design — Benny Benson's eight-star arrangement of the Big Dipper and North Star on midnight navy blue — is reproduced with sharp color separation on lightweight printed polyester. The gold stars and "Alaska" wordmark read clearly at arm's length and across a parade route. Because printed polyester is purpose-built for display and event use rather than sustained outdoor flagpole flying, the colors stay vivid and the fabric stays lightweight through repeated handling and short-duration outdoor use.

The 24-inch smooth hardwood dowel is the correct length for comfortable one-handed waving: long enough to keep the flag elevated above your hand for full visibility, light enough to carry for an entire parade route without fatigue. A classic gold-tone ball finial caps the top. The flag arrives fully assembled — sleeve pre-attached to the pole — ready to wave, stand in a desk base, or hand to a student.

Desk Display — What You Need

The 24-inch wood pole is approximately 3/8 inch in diameter — the standard size for desk flag bases sold in office supply stores and flag retailers. To display upright on a desk, podium, or reception table, simply insert the base of the pole into any standard 3/8-inch desk flag base (sold separately). No adapters, no tools, no assembly. The flag will stand upright and display Alaska's design face-forward. For a temporary display, a clean glass or small vase filled with sand or gravel works equally well.

Setup & Display — 3 Steps

1

Remove from Packaging

The flag arrives with the pole pre-assembled inside the sleeve. Unfold and smooth any light shipping creases by hanging in warm air for 30 minutes, or press gently through a cloth with a cool iron.

2

Desk Display

Insert the base of the 24-inch wood pole into any standard 3/8-inch desk flag base. The flag stands upright and displays face-forward. No tools, no hardware, no adapters needed.

3

Handheld Use

Grip the lower third of the pole for comfortable waving. Keep your hand below the flag sleeve attachment point to keep the fabric seated properly. The 200D flag flies freely in light to moderate hand motion.

About the Alaska State Flag — Benny Benson's Design

Alaska's state flag was designed in 1927 by 13-year-old Benny Benson of the Jesse Lee Mission Home in Seward, Alaska, who won a territorial flag competition out of 142 entries. His design: eight gold stars on a midnight navy blue field — seven forming the Big Dipper constellation and one larger star representing Polaris, the North Star. In his own submission statement, Benson wrote that the North Star "is for the future state of Alaska, the most northerly of the Union." The design was adopted as Alaska's official state flag when it achieved statehood on January 3, 1959, and has remained unchanged ever since. The flag you're holding today is the same design a teenager drew in a coastal Alaska classroom nearly a century ago.

Care & Maintenance

Keeping your Alaska stick flag looking its best

  • Smoothing Creases

If the flag arrives with light shipping folds, hang it in a warm room for 30–60 minutes. For stubborn creases, press with a cool iron set to "synthetic" through a thin cloth. Never iron directly on the polyester print — heat will damage the colors.

  • Spot Cleaning

Spot-clean the flag panel with a damp cloth and mild soap. Rinse with clean water and air dry flat or hanging. Do not machine wash or fully submerge — the hemmed pole sleeve is not designed for wash-cycle agitation.

  • Avoid Sustained Direct Sun

Printed polyester fades faster than nylon under continuous UV exposure. For desk display near a window, rotate occasionally. For storage, keep away from direct sunlight — UV degrades print quality even without flying stress.

  • Wood Pole Care

Wipe the wood dowel dry after any moisture exposure. Prolonged dampness causes the wood to swell, which may crack the pole sleeve or cause splintering. For desk display, an occasional wipe with a dry cloth keeps the finish clean.

  • Storage

Store flat or loosely rolled — never folded tightly at the same crease for long periods. The original packaging or a flat document sleeve works well. A flag stored clean and dry will maintain its appearance for years of desk display and periodic event use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the PromoPatriot Alaska State Stick Flag 12×18 Inch

A stick flag (also called a hand flag or parade flag) is a self-contained, pole-mounted display item — the flag panel is pre-attached to a short wood pole and designed for holding, waving, or propping on a desk. A flagpole flag is a separate fabric panel with brass grommets or a rope sleeve, designed to be hoisted on an external flagpole using mounting hardware. The two formats serve different purposes and are not interchangeable. This 12×18 inch stick flag is purpose-built for handheld event use, desk display, classroom, and gifting. For residential or commercial outdoor flagpole flying, see the PromoPatriot Alaska Nylon Grommet Flag range — available in 3×5, 4×6, 5×8, 6×10, and 8×12 ft for poles from 15 ft to 80 ft.

Yes. The wood dowel is approximately 3/8 inch in diameter — the standard size for desk flag bases sold at office supply stores, flag retailers, and online. Insert the base of the pole into the desk base hole and the flag stands upright, no adhesive or fastener required. If you have an older or non-standard base, measure the hole diameter before ordering — most bases accept 3/8-inch poles, but some decorative vase-style holders vary. For a temporary display without a proper base, a small glass or jar filled with sand or gravel works equally well as a stand.

This flag is not designed for sustained outdoor flagpole flying. Printed polyester stick flags are engineered for display and short-duration event use — handheld waving, desk stands, indoor display, and sheltered event environments. Continuous wind stress, UV exposure, and rain will cause the printed polyester to fade, fray, and degrade much faster than a purpose-built nylon or polyester flagpole flag. If you want Alaska's flag flying on a residential or commercial pole, the PromoPatriot Alaska 200D Nylon Flagpole Flags (available in 3×5 ft through 8×12 ft with brass grommets and reinforced fly hem) are the correct format — rated for all-weather outdoor installation on poles from 15 ft to 80 ft.

This is a single-sided printed flag. Alaska's official design is printed on the front (obverse) face of the lightweight polyester panel. Because the fabric is single-ply, the reverse side shows a natural mirrored bleed-through — which is standard and expected for all stick flags in this format. The front face displays Alaska's design correctly: navy field with the Big Dipper stars, North Star, and "Alaska" wordmark all reading in the correct orientation. For desk display, orient the pole so the front face points outward. If you require a flag with full design opacity on both sides independently, see the PromoPatriot Alaska Double-Sided Reverse Print Nylon flags.

Absolutely — bulk orders are welcome and encouraged. Stick flags are one of the most practical event purchases: low per-unit cost, no assembly required, and easy to distribute by the armful. Common bulk buyers include schools ordering for Alaska History or Geography units and Statehood Day (January 3) events; parade and civic groups for Alaska Day (October 18) celebrations; government agencies and visitor centers for welcome baskets or reception tables; and tourism operators, lodges, and Alaska-themed retailers for resale. Contact us through the product page for bulk pricing on orders of 12 or more. Bulk orders ship in reinforced flat-pack cartons to protect all poles during transit.

Yes. The PromoPatriot Alaska Stick Flag faithfully reproduces Benny Benson's official design as codified in Alaska state flag code: a dark navy blue field (approximating PMS 282), eight five-pointed gold stars (approximating PMS 116) arranged to form the Big Dipper asterism and the North Star positioned at the upper right, and the word "Alaska" in gold block letters. Benson, a 13-year-old Aleut student from Seward, won the territorial flag design contest in 1927 out of 142 entries. The design was adopted as Alaska's official state flag when Alaska achieved statehood on January 3, 1959, and has remained unchanged. The PromoPatriot stick flag reproduces that design at the 12×18 inch handheld format.

Store the stick flag flat or loosely rolled — never tightly folded at the same crease repeatedly, as this creates permanent fold lines in the printed polyester over time. Keep away from sustained direct sunlight during storage, as UV fades printed polyester faster than nylon or embroidered flags. A flat storage sleeve, document tube, or the original packaging all work well. If the flag develops light creases after storage, hang it in a warm room for 30–60 minutes or press lightly through a cloth with a cool iron (synthetic setting). Keep the wood pole dry: prolonged moisture exposure causes wood to swell and may eventually split the grain or crack the pole sleeve.

The stick flag is the right choice when your use is handheld, desk-based, or short-duration event display. Upgrade to a grommet flagpole flag when: you want the flag flying on a residential, commercial, or institutional outdoor pole; the flag will be exposed to wind, rain, or direct sun for extended periods; you need it to read clearly at a distance greater than 30 feet; or you want a permanent, all-weather display you hoist and lower on a regular schedule. The PromoPatriot Alaska 3×5 Ft 200D Nylon Flag with Brass Grommets is the entry-level outdoor upgrade, scaling up through 4×6, 5×8, 6×10, and 8×12 ft for larger poles and commercial or institutional installations.

Return within 30 days in original, unused condition for a full refund. A prepaid return label is provided — no questions asked. If your stick flag arrives with a printing defect, a damaged pole, or a sleeve attachment issue, contact us within 30 days for a free replacement at no cost to you — no return shipping required for defective items. Bulk orders and custom orders are final sale unless defective.
